Malaysia Shopping Day Trip 18 July 2009

Woodlands causeway

We left home before 1000 hrs and headed for the petrol station to top up the petrol tank. This is so as to comply with the ¾ full gasoline tank that is required upon leaving Singapore and driving into Malaysia. Thus began our Malaysia shopping day trip.

We reached Woodlands checkpoint at 1030 hrs and cleared both the Singapore and Malaysian immigration and customs authorities by 1110 hrs.

Toll at Singapore Woodlands checkpoint S$ 1.20 USD0.83

Toll at Malaysian checkpoint RM 2.90 USD0.82

Following instructions from our Garmin global positioning system, our most treasured talking street directory, fondly known as our Ms Secretary, we drove all the way along a mostly straight road to The Store, a fair 10 km from the checkpoint.

The Store

We spent some time at The Store and managed to get some vegetables on special offer. There was a shop specializing in wedding favours and decorative items.

After shopping at The Store, we went opposite to S’mart, a commercial centre for perishables and daily needs where you can do bulk purchases. Prices of certain items were pretty good especially household items and products that you would require if you were operating a food or catering business. We were tempted to by a canopy which would be good for outdoor party use at less than RM200 (USD56.25). There is also a S’mart membership card available for RM5 (USD1.40) per year where you can collect points from over 65 stores in S’mart. Very useful if you are a regular S’mart shopper.

At the same time, if you are looking for some musical instruments, you can check out one of the shops specializing in such instruments.

Following that, we went outside to savour some durians. As we had a newspaper cutting, we were able to receive 2 kg of rambutans free when we bought RM20 (USD5.65) worth of durians. Meanwhile we sat at the tables provided and immediately enjoyed some of the durians. At RM10 (USD2.80) for 2 durians, they were pretty good value for money and tasted great as well.

More fruits

After the durians, we took a short walk over to Carrefour next door. Here we managed to get some fruits as well as ‘Just Drop’, a toilet deodorant.

We started our journey home at 1550 hrs and stopped by a petrol station to top up the tank. It would be good to make use of the favourable exchange rate and better price of petrol over in Malaysia to refill your tank. It was a smooth journey at the Malaysian end of Woodlands Causeway but we took about 15 minutes to clear the Singapore side of customs and immigration. We were finally on our way at 1645 hrs. Pretty good timing.

There were no tolls to be paid upon entering Singapore this time. We had a great time in Malaysia shopping and thanks to our Garmin global positioning system, we could travel in Malaysia just as if we were so familiar with the roads. The GPS is truly an awesome invention!
