Malaysia Vacation – Kuala Lumpur & Genting Highlands Day 5

10th Dec 2009 Day 5 Thursday

Christmas Decor in Malaysia Shopping Centre

The last day of our Malaysia vacation, we had bought quite a number of items during our Malaysia shopping. Now in the KL Hotel Capitol, we decided to take a slow and easy day and just enjoy our time here in Kuala Lumpur before we fly home to Changi Airport Singapore by Air Asia Travel, the budget airline.

As we had done most of our shopping for this trip and bought whatever we had wanted to buy as well as not thought of buying, we met at 0900 hrs for breakfast at Bebe Coffee House on the mezzanine floor of this Kuala Lumpur accommodation. As before, since we had 4 rooms and each room came with one complimentary breakfast, we were entitled to 4 complimentary breakfasts. For the other 4 persons, we made use of our FHI privilege cards to have 2 complimentary breakfasts and thus ended up paying for only 2 breakfasts. Using our last RM30 (USD8.75) cash voucher, we ended up paying RM32 (USD9.35) for our breakfast.

As we had bought some items in Giant Supermarket in Sungei Wang Plaza yesterday and upon realizing that we had been overcharged, we went back to Giant this morning to get a refund.

Cages seem to be the trend... Recently when we attended a wedding dinner, the table decor comprised cages as well!

TIPS FOR TRAVEL:-
This is not the first time that we have been overcharged whilst shopping in Giant Malaysia. Do check the prices of the items on your bill or when the cashier is scanning the items to ensure you are being charged the correct price.

We then proceeded to a little kiosk on the same basement level selling Lulu Nonya cakes and bought some onde onde, a local Malaysian kuih (cake) made of glutinous rice and covered in grated coconut, to bring home. When you pop it into your mouth, you will feel the sweet sensation of gula Melaka (palm syrup) oozing into your mouth. At RM2 (USDxx) a pack of 9 mini onde onde, it was great value for money.

After that we made our way to Starbucks coffee to order another 3 cups of coffee in order to hit 11 stamps on the Christmas wish card so that we could redeem for another 2010 year planner. We had already redeemed one 2010 year planner during this Malaysia vacation and this would be the second redemption.

TIPS FOR TRAVEL:-
If you have a Jusco card, you can get 10% off at Starbucks and some other outlets, thus giving you more for your money.

Next, we went back to Hotel Capitol to do our final packing before checking out at 12 noon. Leaving our luggage with the bellman, we made our way to Plaza Low Yat, the IT center to do some window shopping.

Nonetheless, our eyes were ‘itchy’ and we could not just shop without buying anything. Before we knew it, we ended up buying some small souvenir items as gifts.

IT products galore

Located at the basement of Plaza Low Yat is a food court. The whole group split up to eat at the stall of their choice. We went to Taro Ramen, a Japanese eatery, to have some Japanese lunch. We ordered the Tenshin Don (egg over rice) @RM10 (USD2.90) and the unagi (eel) bento set @RM22 (USD6.40). Overall the quality of the food was good and we were happy and satisfied with our meal.

After lunch, we collected our luggage from Hotel Capitol Kuala Lumpur and the family van that we had booked was at the KL hotel driveway at 1400 hrs as arranged waiting to pick us up and send us to Kuala Lumpur Airport LCC Terminal where the budget airline, Air Asia travel is stationed.

TIPS FOR TRAVEL:-
A nice and friendly driver, Syamsuddin can be contacted at 019-2579023. He basically operates out of KL Airport LCC Terminal but can be booked for day trips or bookings around town. If you are coming through the LCC Terminal, you can contact him in advance and arrange with him on the transportation cost.

For a family of 8, he charged us RM150 (USD43.75) from the KL hotel to Kuala Lumpur Airport LCC Terminal. He is very prompt and always on time as arranged, making our trip very memorable.

The family van...

We arrived at the LCC Terminal at 1515 hrs and checked in at the counter for our Air Asia flight which was scheduled for 1700 hrs. We went through immigration and did some last minute shopping inside.

Our budget flight was slightly delayed and we finally took off at 1515 hrs for our flight back to Changi airport Singapore. This was a short, yet unforgettable holiday vacation in Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands. Not only did we gain more tips for travel, we also had a fun Malaysia vacation with family members, not forgetting the amount of shopping we managed to put in as well.
