Hong Kong Dining - Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Hong Kong Dining

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant (simplified Chinese: 南翔馒头店; traditional Chinese: 南翔饅頭店; pinyin: nánxiáng mántóu diàn) is a traditional Shanghai eatery established in 1900 and recently expanded internationally, with branches in Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and even Singapore.

Entrance to Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant

With the Shanghai branch experiencing long queues for its takeaways, our friend Steven brought us to the restaurant whilst we were in Hong Kong to try the famed xiaolongbao.  These xiaolongbao are soup dumplings traditionally filled with either meat or seafood and with solid meat aspic wrapped inside the skin together with the filling.  This gelatin-gelled aspic then melts into soup when steamed.

Xiaolongbao - steamed dumplings stuffed with pork
Personally I felt that the skin at the top is not as tender as the sides and would have been great if it had been otherwise.

Our menu for the day

Puff pastry with cashew nuts

The puff pastry with cashew nuts was really good.  It was unique with its pastry topped with black sesame seeds and filled with cashew nuts on the inside.  A must try!

Jellied pork terrine

FOOD!!!
Deep fried fillet of fish with sweet and sour sauce
Fried sliced beef with mixed bell pepper

Stir fried glutinous rice with shredded pork

Deep fried souffle balls with red bean paste
The deep fried souffle balls tasted light and airy and not too sweet.  :)
