Singapore, a tiny island measuring 26 mi/42 km from west to east and 14 mi/23 km from north to south, is strategically located at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula. Covering a total area of 647.5 sq km, Singapore has some 63 islets within its territorial waters and is a mostly undulating country with low hills, the highest being Bukit Timah Hill at 540-ft/166-m.

Being a multiracial society, Singapore has a population of some 4.48 million. A majority are Chinese with a substantial Malay and Indian minorities as well. Singapore is unique in the sense that it has four official languages, namely English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. Although the national Singapore language is Malay, English is the working language. English serves as the link between the different ethnic groups and is used by the business community and the educational system. As such, most tourists will not face any language problems whilst on a vacation here. You might even get to hear the colloquial English used in everyday lives that is often referred to as Singlish.
Singapore is a cosmopolitan society where people live harmoniously and interaction amongst the different races is commonly seen. The pattern of Singapore stems from the inherent cultural diversity of the island. The major festivities in Singapore include New Year, Chinese New Year celebrated by the Chinese, Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji celebrated by the Malays and Deepavali celebrated by the Indians. Whilst in Singapore on a holiday, be sure to check out the various tourist attractions such as the ethnic enclaves like Chinatown, Geylang Serai and Little India to the various shopping malls to the famous Singapore Orchid Garden and Sentosa Island. More and more tourists are becoming more adventurous by venturing into the more suburban areas and local neighbourhoods via the MRT Singapore which makes travelling around Singapore so much more convenient.

If you are here in Singapore for shopping, be sure to go to Singapore Orchard Road, the shopper’s haven, which is unrivalled in terms of sheer volume, quality and choice. Believe it or not, shopping is second to eating as a national pastime in Singapore. Avid shoppers should visit during the Great Singapore Sale which usually falls between the months of June to July. During this time, expect to find discounts galore and genuine bargains for a wide variety of goods, including designer products, thus presenting you with a mighty shopping extravaganza. You can literally shop till you drop daily from 10 in the morning till 9 or 10 at night. Or you can head on down to Mustafa Singapore mall and shop for bargains round the clock.

While in Singapore, check out the various cuisine that is available. You can opt for the lavish spread in a number of high class restaurants or go on a budget eating spree at the inexpensive hawker centre which can be found in many housing estates as well as transport hubs.
