The meaning of batik:- wax printed patterned cloth where its motifs of flowers, twinning plants, leaves, buds, flowers, birds, butterflies, fish, insects and geometric forms are rich in symbolic association and variety.

Batik has evolved around the principle that wax and water repel each other. Therefore, an area of fabric that has been covered with wax is unable to accept dye. if the cloth to be dyed is white bleached cotton or silk, then wherever hot wax is applied will remain white in the final design.

It was an educational visit to the batik factory and we learned that in the process of batiking, you need the following material or equipment:-
  • Batik wax = beeswax + paraffin wax
  • Batik block = mainly made of recycle can
  • Table = specially designed for hand block batik made of sponge filled with water
  • Chanting = pen-like equipment made of copper which is used to fill batik wax to be applied onto batik fabric
  • Sodium silicate = natural dye which is extracted fro plants (to avoid skin allergy)
  • Soda ash
If just viewing the process of how to batik is not your cup of tea, try colouring your own piece of batik fabric. Choose from the various designs available and create your own masterpiece.
