Ten Free Things To Do In Bangkok

By Flipnomad for Yahoo! Travel

Travelling in Bangkok can be very expensive especially if we keep on paying for transportation, entrance fees and other similar fees just to get the chance to see a particular tourist spot or landmark. But for those that don't have that much budget to spend on touristic activities, there are still a variety of things to see and do without costing you anything at all aside from transportation. Here's a list of some free things to do in Bangkok.

1. Temple Hopping

There are so many Wats or temples that you can visit in Bangkok without paying a hefty entrance fees. A lot of them are as beautiful as well as those that require a fee to be seen. If you spend some time inside a Wat, you'll also get the chance to see how devoted some Thais are to their spiritual beliefs.

2. Window Shopping

"Mall-ing" or window shopping is a popular activity for locals and tourists alike who want to spend the hot afternoon inside an air-conditioned building. Check out Bangkok events guide to see if there are upcoming free shows being held in some malls. Mall-ing is also a great way of observe the local life, especially of young Thais. Siam Square is a good place to also see the designs of up-and-coming Thai designers.

3. Food Sampling

Go to the supermarket and walk around and do some taste test or food sampling of some local foods being sold. Small portions are prepared for the shoppers to try.

4. Wildlife Spotting

Aside from cats, dogs and rats that are commonly found in a lot of cities, you'd be surprised to find some other animals around Bangkok. There are monitor lizards often spotted in Lumphini Park, squirrels, crows and other variety of birds. Afternoon would be the best time to see squirrels running around scavenging for food in local parks.

5. See some Street Art

Others call it vandalism and others call it art. Whatever you call it, there's a few that you can find in Bangkok. I saw some near the Victory monument and they're indeed impressive.

6. Visit Parks

Bangkok has a lot of parks that you can go to. The most popular is Lumphini Park, but if you're staying in Khao San, the nearest would be Santichai Phrakarn Park which faces the mighty Chao Phraya River. I often spend the afternoon here to relax while sipping my favourite milk tea and watch the sun as it sets.

7. Visit Bangkok Arts and Culture Center

Bangkok's contemporary museum is just across MBK. You'll see cool art installations, galleries and the building itself is an eye candy. Admission is free except if there are special shows being held.  Check out BACC website for more information.

8. Visit Museums

A number of museums are free of charge, some charges very minimal fee and worth a visit. Some of them include: Royal Elephant Museum, The Correction Museum and The Bangkokian Museum.

9. Visit Butterfly Garden and Insectarium

A short walking distance from Chatuchak weekend market takes you to a garden that houses a variety of butterflies and insects. It houses hundreds of butterflies and has informative displays that will help us understand and learn more about these beautiful creatures.

10. Visit Markets

Visiting the markets in Bangkok is one of my favourite things to do whenever and wherever I travel. It's free (except if you buy stuff of course) and it helps me learn a lot by observing locals and the products being sold. There're so many things that you'll see in Bangkok‘s local markets that you may not find in your home country.

These are just some of the free things that you can do in Bangkok. The possibilities to know more and enjoy more of Bangkok seem to be endless if you search more and become more creative in your travels. Enjoy Bangkok and always remember that travelling does not need to be expensive.
