Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore - a majestic building

The Basilica de Santa Maria del Fiore or Cathedral of Santa Maria del Flore is the Cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy, and is one of the largest churches in Italy.  It is also known as the Florence Cathedral, being the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence.

Construction of the Florence Cathedral commenced in 1296 in the Gothic style although the design of the dome is attributed to Filippo Brunelleschi and only completed in 1436. The dome remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.

Standing adjacent to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore is a 84.7 meters (277.9 ft) tower of Florentine Gothic architecture. This is Giotto's Campanile and has rich sculptural decorations.

In the Piazza del Duomo is another religious building, the Florence Baptistery or Battistero di San Giovanni, also known as the Baptistery of St. John. The Florence Baptistery has the status of a minor basilica.

Built between 1059 and 1128, the octagonal Florence Baptistery is one of the oldest buildings in Tuscany with a Florentine Romanesque architecture.

Renowned for its three sets of artistically important bronze doors with relief sculptures, Michelangelo dubbed the east pair of doors as the "Gates of Paradise".

Located in Piazza del Duomo, the three buildings - Basilica de Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile - are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction in Tuscany.
