Having spent two nights here in The Legend Resort, Cherating we planned to do some Malaysia shopping in Kuantan. From Cherating, Kuantan is approximately 40 km away. Along the way, we decided to pay a visit to The Natural Batik Village, one of the Malaysia attractions, which is between Cherating and Kuantan.
Before leaving, we had some prune lapis cake which we had specially brought along with us on this Chinese New Year vacation.

The Natural Batik Village is some 20 km away from our beach resort accommodation. Located at Lot 4898, Batu 9 ½, Jalan Kemaman, Kampong Chengal Lempongi Balok, 26100 Kuantan Pahang Darul Makmur, it is open from 1000 hrs – 1900 hrs daily.

Not only can you find a wide selection of batik products and souvenir, you can also view the process of making the batik fabric. There are basically 4 processes to batik fabric making.
Process 4 - Boiling the fabric to remove the wax
If just viewing the batik making process is not your cup of tea, try painting your own piece of batik. Choose from the various designs available and create your own masterpiece.

Next on the agenda was some shopping in Kuantan, Malaysia. We headed for Berjaya Megamall some 15km away from the Natural Batik Village. It was disappointing to find almost 50% of the shops closed, most probably due to the Chinese New Year Spring Festival celebrations. We managed to do some shopping at ‘Hot Market’ where most of the items were on sale with ‘Buy 1, Free 1’ signs everywhere. It was a good bargain indeed.

Looking for an eating spot for lunch, we headed to the basement. Surprisingly there was no food court there. Thus we decided to have lunch at Rasa Ayamas on Level 1. Although the flyer we had taken from the information counter indicated the set lunch at RM5.99 (USD1.80) ++ that is available from 1200 – 1500 hrs would be ready in 10 minutes, we had to wait almost half an hour. Both the nasi ayam (chicken rice) honey prime roast and mi kicap (ketchup noodles) with roasted pepper chicken were quite tasty.

Upon completing our lunch, we walked around the whole of Berjaya Megamall. Lacking the shopping experience we so desired, we checked our Garmin global positioning system for other shopping locations in the vicinity. Setting our destination to Kuantan Parade, we somehow ended up near East Coast Mall and decided to check it out instead.

To our pleasant surprise, we discovered that East Coast Mall was ‘The Most Happening Place’ and all the shops were open for business. It looked to be a newer establishment located in Putra Square.

Just next to it is the Cultural Town, where there are 3 buildings representing China Town, Indian Town and Malay Town. Most of the shops in the Cultural Town were still not taken up yet, so it must be pretty new.

Upon finishing our shopping at East Coast Mall, we made our way back to Balok Beach where we visited the Natural Batik Village earlier today. Here we went to the Balok Pasar Malam (Balok night market), which is open weekly every Wednesday night.

Covering a bigger area than the Monday night market at Kemaman, this night market seems to be more interesting. You can find fresh vegetables here as well a good variety of Malay Malaysian food. We explored the area and finally settled on barbeque chicken, chicken satay (meat on skewers), putu mayam (string hoppers) and roti john (omelette sandwich) for dinner with toufu fa (soya beancurd) as dessert. After purchasing our unique mix and match Malaysian meal, we headed back to our accommodation The Legend Resort.
Our truly Malaysian dinner
Excitedly we had our dinner and they were all very tasty. The barbeque chicken at RM2.30 (USD0.70) was well marinated and a little spicy. The satay chicken cost RM0.40 (USD0.12) a stick and was cooked just right with a much thicker peanut gravy than the one we had bought from Kemaman night market on Monday. The texture of the putu mayam was just right and getting 4 pieces for RM1 (USD0.30) was a great bargain. The roti john with a generous dose of eggs cost M2.80 (USD0.85) and was not too bad except that the bread was not crispy since they used a hot dog bun instead of the French loaf that we were used to. The toufu fa with gula Melaka (palm sugar) was quite unique as what we usually get is with plain white sugar, though not quite as silky smooth. However, at RM1.50 (USD0.45) per bowl, it makes a great dessert.
After dinner, we proceeded to the lobby to listen to the trio La Quinta as well as gain online access. Complimentary internet access is available in the lobby and the Cherating Lounge.

This ended the third day of our Malaysia vacation in this beach resort accommodation, The Legend Resort, Cherating. Not only did we manage to visit the Natural Batik Village and learn about the batik making process, we also managed to enjoy our favourite pasttime, shopping in Malaysia. The highlight of the day was the Balok night market where we could get various kinds of local Malay Malaysian food. It is such a pity that this night market is only open once a week as that means that we shall not have the opportunity to visit it again during this holiday vacation.
