Malaysia Vacation – One Week In Kuala Lumpur 20 Nov – 27 Nov 2009

20 Nov – Day 1

Palace of the Golden Horses

Today, Friday, we look forward to our week-long Malaysia vacation holiday. As we have a 7 nights’ stay in a Kuala Lumpur (KL) hotel, The Palace of The Golden Horses, tagged as Asia’s Most Extraordinary Hotel, we hope to discover more Malaysia attractions, without following any Malaysia tour but just by traveling on public transport or with the help of our Garmin global positioning system. At the same time we were enthusiastically looking forward to some great Malaysia shopping bargains, not mentioning trying out the well-known delectable food of Malaysia. If possible, we would also like to try the Malaysia massage during this Kuala Lumpur holiday.

We left home at 0955 hrs and headed towards Tuas Second Link Checkpoint for our travel to Malaysia. Being a weekday, there was no queue at all on both sides of the causeway. Thus, we were on Malaysia roads by 1035 hrs.

It was a smooth journey all the way except for some road works along the North South highway which resulted in the road merging into a single lane, thereby causing a slight slow down in speed. Other than that, there were no hiccups and it was a breeze to travel.

We stopped at Ayer Keroh Rest & Relaxation (R&R) at 1245 hrs for lunch and toilet break. After topping up our phone card and having a simple RM2 (USD0.60) nasi lemak (coconut rice) lunch, we continued on our journey to The Palace of The Golden Horses Kuala Lumpur at 1315 hrs.

We arrived at our destination in Mines Resort, Palace of The Golden Horses, at 1420 hrs. However it took us thirty minutes before we managed to get our room as the hotel was experiencing quite a full occupancy and the reception staff had problems locating the appropriate category of room for some guests.

We were assigned Room 4079 which was nicely furnished, large and spacious.

As we decided to spend our time in Mines Shopping Fair since that was quite close to our hotel, we made a booking for the 1700 hrs shuttle to Mines Shopping Fair to do our first league of Malaysia shopping. At the same time, we hoped to try some good Malaysia local food. Needless to say, if we could find a place offering massage at a good and reasonable price, we would be all for testing it out as well.

Along the short ten minutes that it took the complimentary shuttle to travel to Mines Shopping Fair via an internal road, we passed by the Mines Resort and Golf Club, the 36-hole venue for World Cup Golf, the Palace Beach & Spa now known as Mines Wellness Hotel, the only beach in the city, as well as Mines international Exhibition & Conventional Centre, a convention centre offering a new exhibition experience.

The Mines Resort City is presently home to the "Seven Wonders of Malaysia". Known as Malaysia’s Resort City, the Mines is surrounded by a 150-acre man-made lake that sprawls over 1,000 acres. In the Mines Resort, Palace of the Golden Horses in particular has played host to many Head of States, celebrities as well as International events.

Upon reaching Mines Shopping Fair, we headed straight for Spices of Malaysia on Level 2 for dinner. With quite a nice variety of local Malaysian food, we decided on salted fish fried rice and belacan (prawn paste) fried rice @ RM5.80 (USD1.70). Both the dishes were good, nice and delicious though not as spicy as expected. For dessert, we had the ABC, a shaved ice dessert, @ RM2.60 (USD0.75).

We explored part of the Mines Shopping Fair and did a tour of the shopping complex before deciding to go to Thai Odyssey for a 2 hour Traditional Thai Massage @ RM98 (USD28.90) before 5% Government taxes.

Thai Odyssey

Awarded the Best Massage Centre by Tourism Malaysia, Thai Odyssey was very professional and the place was clean and well kept. Sticking to hygienic standards, the massage started with thorough washing of the feet. A great ‘must-try’ value for money experience, we were also served with ginseng tea before and after the massage.

After the wonderful traditional Thai massage where you will find an oasis for your body, mind and soul, we proceeded to Bread Stories and all the bread loaves were being offered at 20% discount. We bought a raisin loaf @RM6.50 (USD1.90) before the discount.

As it was almost 2130 hrs, we waited at the complimentary shuttle pick-up area for the short travel trip back to The Palace of The Golden Horses.

This ended our first day of our Malaysia vacation holiday. Our smooth travel driving to our Kuala Lumpur holiday destination in Mines Resort, Palace of the Golden Horses made the journey all the more memorable for us. This KL hotel is an exquisite accommodation which you simply must try. At the same time, although we did not do much shopping in Mines, we did manage to try out the massage here in Malaysia, albeit a Thai massage instead of a Malaysia massage. We look forward to checking out more Malaysia attractions over the next few days in our self-scheduled Malaysia tour.
