Dutch Wooden Clogs

Gigantic Wooden Clogs

Mention Dutch wooden shoes, and automatically most people will think of the traditional Dutch wooden clogs.  These clogs have long been associated with the Dutch people.

Here are some pictures we took of these wooden clogs whilst we were visiting Zaanse Schans during our recent Europe vacation package.

Some of these Dutch clogs have been officially accredited as safety shoes as they can withstand almost any penetration including sharp objects and/or concentrated acids.   Although most Dutch no longer wear these wooden clogs for everyday use, they are popular among people working in their gardens and farms.

These wooden Dutch clogs, or klompen, are one of the most loved tourist souvenirs.  You can find them on keychains in various sizes and colours or even buy these clogs as gifts as the Dutch consider wearing clogs as being healthy for the wearers' feet.

Heard from one of our tour group members that she had a friend who bought some of the larger wooden clogs not to wear as clogs but to use as decorative pot planters.  How ingenious!

Beautiful design - some use this as a pot planter
If you visit Zaanse Schans, a 17th century town, you will be able to experience how the wooden clogs are made.  There will be a live demonstration starting from the raw block of wood to the finished wooden clogs as in the picture.
